Stage 1

A basic understanding of how a boat sails, with some experience of steering and handling the boat

    4 half days or 2 full days
  • COURSE CONTENT
    Launching and recovery, steering, parts of the boat, basic Sailing
  • ABILITY AFTER COURSE
    Able to steer and understand basic principles

Stage 2

A range of Sailing skills and knowledge to help in becoming a confident sailor
  • ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE
    Stage 1, basic knowledge and steering ability
  • MINIMUM DURATION
    4 half days or 2 full days
  • COURSE CONTENT
    Basic Sailing skills, ropework, collision avoidance
  • ABILITY AFTER COURSE
    Able to tack and control boat speed, and understand basic principles

Stage 3

Rigging, launching and Sailing in any direction
  • ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE
    Up to and including the Stage 2 course
  • MINIMUM DURATION
    4 half days or 2 full days
  • COURSE CONTENT
    Rigging, launching and recovery, Sailing techniques, capsize recovery, Sailing theory
  • ABILITY AFTER COURSE
    Able to launch and Sail a dinghy around a triangular course in moderate conditions

Stage 4

(optional if Stage 3 was taken in a double hander)
Sail a double handed boat as crew or helm and solve a variety of problems afloat
  • ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE
    Up to and including Stage 3
  • MINIMUM DURATION
    4 half days or 2 full days
  • COURSE CONTENT
    Can launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring, and Sail a crewed dinghy around a triangular course in moderate conditions
  • ABILITY AFTER COURSE
    More confident in Sailing skills and techniques, and ready to progress onto the advanced modules

Seamanship Skills

How to handle a boat in all circumstances and solve problems afloat
  • ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE
    Sailing skills to the standard of the Stage 4 course
  • MINIMUM DURATION
    4 half days or 2 full days
  • COURSE CONTENT
    Launching and recovering the boat in different circumstances, stopping, reducing sail, recovering a man overboard, anchoring
  • ABILITY AFTER COURSE
    Able to handle a wide range of situations afloat

Day Sailing

Passage planning and decision making for small boat cruising
  • ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE
    Sailing skills to the standard of the Stage 4 course
  • MINIMUM DURATION
    4 half days or 2 full days
  • COURSE CONTENT
    Preparing and planning for a day cruise, pilotage and decision making including adverse conditions
  • ABILITY AFTER COURSE
    Able to plan and execute a cruise, depending on conditions

Start Racing

The fundamentals of getting off the start line and round the course
  • ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE
    Sailing and knowledge to at least the standard of the Stage 3 course
  • MINIMUM DURATION
    4 half days or 2 full days
  • COURSE CONTENT
    All the skills required to start racing, including how to maximise boat speed and outwit your opponents
  • ABILITY AFTER COURSE
    Able to take part in racing in good conditions
