RYA OnBoard
We are proud to be part of the RYA OnBoard programme that makes sailing easier to access for 8-18-year olds and teaches them so much more.
Through OnBoard, we offer young people the opportunity to try out dinghy sailing in a safe, structured and fun environment. They experience the excitement and relaxation that being on the water offers – and at the same time their sailing lessons teach them all kinds of invaluable life skills, from problem solving to leadership and teamwork.
We offer OnBoard sailing sessions to our local schools here in the Salcombe area, giving groups of 16 pupils a course of six curriculum-focused sailing lessons that encompass teamwork, determination, communication, independence, confidence and creativity.
Sailing provides lots of opportunities for schools to link the curriculum with practical experiences in subjects like Maths, Physics, PE, Science and Geography.
OnBoard also enhances the character of pupils. Sailing has been long known to develop essential life-skills and OnBoard has been working closely with world renowned character thought-leader, Professor Bill Lucas (acclaimed researcher and writer), to maximise character development through its sessions.
Being a Better Learner
The situations and opportunities that Sailing provides, builds powerful connections to a young person’s home and school life, developing their social skills and performance both in and outside of the classroom.
This provides an exciting opportunity for schools to offer a profound benefit to their students. It also puts students in contact with a whole host of further opportunities with the marine sector.
OnBoard has also helped shape the career paths of many individuals taking part. Some have gone on to become Instructors themselves, while others have Sailing competitively from junior right up to international level. Some have started successful careers in Sailing or marine related industries.
